"Jack" Renton, PhD On February 28, the world lost a preeminent geologist, teacher, leader and philanthropist. John Renton taught in the Eberly College's Department of Geology and Geography for more than 50 years. Dr. Renton was Professor Emeritus of Geology and before his retirement served as an Eberly Family Professor for Outstanding Teaching since 2002. It is estimated that Dr. Renton had instructed in his classes over 10% of ALL the WVU students since the universities founding in 1867. Learn more Research Spotlight New Faculty We are pleased to announce that Dr. Charles Shobe, a geomorphologist specializing in cutting edge modeling of landscape evolution, will join the Department of Geology and Geography as a new Assistant Professor of Surficial Processes in January of 2021. Dr. Shobe received a PhD from the University of Colorado-Boulder and is currently a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam. Caretta receives national geography award Congratulations to Martina Angela Caretta, assistant professor of geography and recipient of the American Association of Geographers' 2020 Glenda Laws Award. The annual award recognizes outstanding research contributions to social justice issues. Read more on her research here. Behrens ILI Memorial Scholarship from ASPRS (American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) for outstanding students in geospatial science. Hanwell has been an Intern at the West Virginia GIS Technical Center since January of 2018. At the Tech Center she created the West Virginia Landslide Tool, Worked on a project that involves the creation of a statewide building inventory for all primary structures and critical infrastructure that are located within the 100-year floodplain in West Virginia and worked with the Mountain State Trail Alliance and is creating a series of trail maps at the county and regional level. Internships Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Selected students are awarded a $3,500 stipend for eight weeks of mentored research. An additional $2,000 is available for travel to a professional conference or for supplies. Explore internship opportunities. Colloquium We invite speakers from around the world to talk with students and faculty within the department. Colloquia are held on Friday at 2 p.m. in 325 Brooks Hall during the fall and spring semesters. All talks are free, and most are open to the public. Plan to attend. Weather Live WVU Weather Station The Brooks Hall weather station obtains real-time meteorological data for teaching and research in physical geography, and it presents current weather conditions on campus.
